How to shop for the best cat food. Top 5 Best Seller Cat Food

Cats know what they like to eat, and many are unwilling to deviate from what they want to eat without coaxing. Many people think this is because cats are difficult, but their selectivity is actually an evolutionary trait that keeps them from eating toxic foods. Simply put, your cat only ate certain foods as a kitten and is now certain that only those foods are safe.

You should approach buying cat food the same way you approach breakfast: start with a nutritionally balanced diet. "You need a complete and balanced diet that is appropriate for your cat's life stage," says Bruce Kornreich, DVM, the director of Cornell Feline Health Center in Ithaca, New York.

This is why protein type, mouth feel, and the type of food can be so important for adult cats. To make mealtimes easier, try to decipher your own cat's preferences in terms of preferred proteins, preferred food types - and, if your cat eats wet food, mouth feel. Once you know your cat's preferences, you can reliably choose the food he likes.

Kornreich recommends looking for a nutrition label from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), a nonprofit organization that rates what's in pet food and pet treats. Since cats are carnivores, meat is an important part of a balanced diet, which Kornreich emphasizes.

"If meat and meat byproducts are among the first ingredients listed, it indicates that the food likely contains enough animal ingredients to provide essential amino acids and fatty acids," Kornreich says. But cats can't live on meat alone.

"Cats need to get nutrients like calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D from other ingredients," says Shelly Ferris, DVM, regional director of Petco Veterinary Services.

She recommends looking for cat foods with "natural whole ingredients like fruits, vegetables and high-quality carbohydrates like rice, oats or potatoes."

Good news. Your cat needs you. They also need the right cat food, not just a separate bowl of dog food. Like dog food, there are many options on the market when it comes to cat food. “Cats are often thought of and fed as smaller dogs,” says Tim Julien, DVM, the chief medical officer at Paz Veterinary in Austin, Texas. “It turns out cats are not small dogs. Cats are obligate, or strict, carnivores and have a decreased ability to digest and use carbohydrates.”

So what’s the best cat food for your obligate carnivore? We consulted experts about how to figure out which cat food is right for you and your cat, as well as compiled some of the best cat food options around.

When asked what to avoid, Paz Veterinary points to ingredients that are "more about mood and marketing than nutrition." He points to dyes that make the food more appealing to humans (cats perceive colors differently) and "exotic" ingredients like kangaroo and lentils that " are less well studied in cats."

If you need to change foods or expand your cat's palate to meet nutritional or health goals, slow changes work for most cats. Since moisture intake is important for long-term cat health, we always recommend including at least some moisture-rich foods in your cat's diet when possible. Some cats may also need to switch between different foods or avoid certain proteins for health reasons.

Dry cat food is a popular choice, in part because it's more convenient than wet cat food. "Dry food is inexpensive, odorless and can be stored for long periods of time without spoiling," Ferris says.

Julien notes, however, that dry cat food can also contain more carbohydrates than wet food. Just as you think about all the sourdough you ate while baking at home, you should also consider the amount of carbohydrates your cat is eating. "An active cat may well use carbohydrates as an energy source," says Julien, adding, "A sedentary cat-also known as a house cat-will store extra carbohydrates as fat."

Wet food requires a little more effort - it needs to be refrigerated once the can or bag is opened - and can be more expensive. But it may also help the cat consume more water (and the smell might entice a picky cat to eat it). "Canned or wet food is higher in protein and fat, making it a good option for cats of different lifestyles and ages," Kornreich says.

  1. I always look for Whiskas cat's foods for my cat. It has been her favorite from she was a kitty. I am very happy to find there are more dry Whiskas foods can be choice in Amazon, especially a few new items importing from Britain(I think so). 2. This cat food IAMS is awesome. I have one particular cat that takes liquid dumps when he eats any brand of cat food that I have given him, except for Iams indoor. Occasionaly, I buy cheap cat food at the gas station when I run out and need a temporary fix. All of my cats' problems come back... hair balls, diarrhea, overeating etc. I have no explanation for it, but there is dentinitely something different about this brand, not just clever marketing. - lsmith1018

  3. My cat love Friskies Ocean Delight Super tasty! No I doubt it, but the cats love it. I had a hard time giving the 5 stars based on flavor and scent, I want to vomit when I smell it and it ruins my day when I get a splash when pulling off the lid. I now wear my rona mask to open the cat food, finally I feel it is a life saver! My opinions aside, if the cats could write they would rate it 6 stars for sure. - Vince
