How to Remove and Handle Cat Claw and Scratching

Cats use their claws for a variety of purposes. Claws are important to cats because they are an essential part of balance. If you've ever watched a cat jump and grab onto a tall object, you've probably noticed that it uses its claws to pull itself up. When climbing trees, cats tend to use their claws to hold onto the bark and climb towards their goal.

Cats also use their claws to stretch, walk, and run. Claws are also the cat's primary means of defense against other animals and humans. Most cats keep their claws extremely sharp, as their claws and teeth are basically their only weapons. Claws are also essential for bathroom use, as cats use them to cover their messes with dirt.

Cats also use their claws to scratch at things that mark their territory. Their claws have glands that contain a secretion. When they leave their mark on something, the secretion is transferred to the area where they scratched. This is detectable to other cats, but not to humans. Sometimes they will scratch at something to remove the older claw, which will fall off and give them a brand new claw to put underneath.

As sad as it is, many pet owners put their own possessions above their cat, such as their expensive furniture or rugs. These cat owners are afraid that their cat will ruin their furniture or carpets, so they choose to remove their cat's claws. Removing a cat's claws is a surgical procedure that can only be performed by a veterinarian. However, the owner needs a good reason because a veterinarian will not perform the surgery just to protect the furniture or carpet.

If you have been thinking about removing your cat's claws, you should know that this procedure can completely change their personality. Once declawed, the cat will be in pain and confused. She may no longer be able to jump in the window or on the couch, and she may not be able to play like she used to. Some cats tend to become aggressive and bite with their teeth after their claws are removed. To make a long story short, the cat will be completely miserable - which is a hard thing to bear for those who love their cats.

Anyone who decides to own a cat should know that a cat can scratch occasionally. If someone is not prepared to deal with this fact, they should not own a cat in the first place. Cats make great pets, even though they have claws and will use them occasionally. There are many other great pets if you are not prepared to deal with a cat. If you are just worried about your furniture or carpet, there are ways you can keep your cat from scratching your items.

First, get your cat a scratching post and let him know where it is and how to use it. You can also get a rush mat to help your cat with her scratching instincts. You may have to demonstrate how to use the mat or scratching post at first, although your cat should catch on quickly. Once you've shown her how, she'll scratch at the post or mat - and not your furniture or carpet.

Although many don't realize it, there are other ways to protect your belongings besides getting your cat scratch-free. Having a cat's claws removed is very painful and confusing for the cat, and can completely change their outlook on things. Before you decide to take the inhumane route of removing your cat's claws, consider other options - your cat will like these options much better.

  1. I satisfied PetnPurr with thickness of the rope and the heavy base. Not sure if base is real wood but it is quite heavy to carry. Aesthetically looks great. My cat loves to climb and jump on it. The only small thing that I did find disappointing was the flowers, they can be easily pulled off, however this really doesn't bother me as much as I'm more interested in the quality of the rope which so far is holding up strong.
